Welcome to the first entry of our developer blog. As we continue to blur the lines between physical artefacts and digital experiences, we wanted a space to discuss the technical and creative hurdles of building an Alternate Reality Game (ARG) layered beneath a traditional indie publishing facade.
When we set out to create The Unknown Field Guide, the primary challenge wasn't just writing the narrative; it was designing the architecture that would allow players to organically discover the hidden layers of the story.
The Physical-Digital Bridge
Our physical zine is pristine, meant to look like a 1950s tourist brochure. But the real magic happens when players notice the "corrections" scribbled in the margins by Team Rabbit. These corrections are more than just flavor text—they are breadcrumbs leading to our digital infrastructure.
Building a robust, un-gameable backend that still feels like a vulnerable, compromised corporate intranet (MLTK) has been a fascinating exercise in contradictory design. We have to build secure systems that pretend to be insecure.
